Working with clay for nearly twenty years, Brian Cully has had the chance to work with, and learn from, many other artists. Brian has learned from average potters learning by themselves to well-known and acclaimed artists such as Peter Volcous, Paul Soldner, Don Riets, Beverly Mier, Arthur Gonzoles, and Rudy Audio. As Brian has said, “To have the chance to learn a skill from more than one person enables an individual to have access to the knowledge of many. Combining others’ artistry and making it your own is to create a vision of what is honest and true. That gives me a feeling of satisfaction in a finished piece. As an artist that is my goal.”
Brian is not the typical potter because he mainly creates nonfunctional, elegant thrown forms with a sculptured aspect. His functional works, though, are pleasing to the eye and to the touch.
The sculptures that he forms are based on the idea of movement that keeps the eye continuously moving around the piece. Brian’s firing processes mainly consist of Raku; high fire cone 10, pit fire/sagger, and some wood fire. All of Brian’s pieces are one of a kind - never trying to duplicate one form - each work leading to the next. His art is in a constant evolution creating a body of work that is a time line of one man’s desire to find what is possible in one lifetime.
Brian’s studio is located in Santa Margarita, California, where he lives and works on his small ranch. The view of the surrounding hills and mountains is a picturesque and peaceful environment in which to create his art.
